It’s the part of Chiang Mai that feels most like an old trading town, because that’s what it was — the historic quarter where Chinese, Burmese and Western merchants settled along the river. Streets are narrow, traffic is light, and a fair number of the buildings are old teak and shophouse stock rather than concrete blocks. There’s a slower rhythm here than anywhere else within walking distance of the centre. It’s the area people move to after a few years in the city, when convenience matters less than being able to hear yourself think.
